This page explains, in plain words, what information is involved when you use the BibleBook.net website and the BibleBook apps for Android and iPhone.
No account needed
You can read the Bible and use all of BibleBook’s tools without creating an account or giving us your name or email address. Signing in is optional; it’s needed only for BibleBook Sync, which keeps your things the same on all your devices (see below).
What stays on your device
Your settings (text size, typeface, translation, night reading), highlights, bookmarks, notes, reading plan progress, the chapters and days you have read, and chapters saved for offline reading are kept in your browser on your own phone or computer. They aren’t sent to us. You can remove them at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser’s settings. To move them to another device, useSave a backup on the Saved page.
The BibleBook apps
The BibleBook apps for Android and iPhone work the same way: the whole Bible is on your phone, and your highlights, notes, bookmarks, reading plans and settings are kept on your phone. The apps have no ads and don’t use your phone’s advertising ID. BibleBook Sync bought in an app is paid through Google Play or the App Store (see Purchases).
Usage statistics in the apps
To learn which parts of the apps are useful and what to improve, the apps use Google Analytics for Firebase, a service from Google. It tells us things like how many people use the app, which screens they open, and how often features such as highlighting, sharing or listening are used.
- It never receives what you read, highlight, write or search for: no verses, books, notes or search words, and nothing you keep with your account.
- To count visits, Firebase gives each installation of the app a random identifier, and it collects basic information about your device (such as its model, operating system and language) and an approximate location (country or region) derived from your IP address.
- It doesn’t use your phone’s advertising ID, and we have turned off advertising features and ad personalisation. We don’t sell this information or use it for advertising.
- Google processes this information for us under its own terms; seePrivacy and security in Firebase andGoogle’s privacy policy. Google keeps analytics data for at most 14 months.
Signing in and BibleBook Sync (optional)
On this website (on the Saved or BibleBook Sync page) or in the app (Settings → Sync across devices), you can choose to sign in with your Google account. Signing in creates a BibleBook account. With BibleBook Sync on the account, your highlights, notes, bookmarks, reading plans, reading progress and chosen translations stay the same on all your devices:
- Google gives us your name, your email address and an account identifier. We use them only to recognise your account and to show you which account you’re signed in with.
- With BibleBook Sync, the things listed above are stored with your account on our server, which runs on Cloudflare, so your devices can sync them. We don’t share them or use them for anything else. Signed in without BibleBook Sync, they aren’t sent to us and stay on your device. If a yearly plan ends, syncing stops; what was already stored stays with your account until you delete it, and nothing on your devices is removed.
- Each device you sign in on gets its own sign-in key, stored with the device’s name (such as “Pixel 9” or “Chrome on Mac”) so you can tell your devices apart. A key ends when you sign out, or after 400 days without use.
- You can delete your account at any time, here on the Saved page or in the app (Settings → Sync across devices → Delete account). That deletes your account and everything stored with it, including its purchase records, from our server straight away; copies in the server’s automatic backups are overwritten within 30 days. What’s on your phone or in your browser stays there. If you can’t sign in any more, email us to delete it. Delete your account has the steps.
If you don’t sign in, your reading and everything you keep stay on your device (the apps send only the usage statistics described above). Google’s sign-in script is loaded only when you press a Sign in button.
Purchases
BibleBook Sync is bought through Google Play (in the Android app), the App Store (in the iPhone app) or Stripe (on this website, on a payment page run by Stripe under Stripe’s privacy policy). Your card and payment details stay with Google, Apple or Stripe: we never see them.
- So that a purchase works on all your devices, we keep a purchase record with your BibleBook account: the store, the product (yearly or one payment), the store’s reference for the purchase, and its dates (when it was bought, when a yearly plan renews or ends, and whether it was refunded). We check it with the store to confirm the purchase.
- On this website, Stripe also shares with us the name and email address you give at checkout, the amount and date, and your card’s brand, country and last four digits, which we keep in our Stripe account for our accounts and to answer questions about a purchase. Stripe uses your email address to send your receipt.
- Records the stores keep, and the payment records the law requires us to keep for our accounts, aren’t removed when you delete your BibleBook account; the purchase record with your account is. We don’t add you to a mailing list.
Our host
BibleBook is hosted by Cloudflare. Like any website, Cloudflare’s servers receive basic connection details, such as your IP address and the kind of browser you use, in order to deliver the pages to you and to protect the site from attacks. SeeCloudflare’s privacy policy.
Counting visits
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to see how many people visit and which pages they read, so we know what is useful. It doesn’t use cookies, doesn’t follow you to other websites, and gives us only totals, not information about you as a person.
Listening to a chapter
Listen uses the voice built into your phone, tablet or computer. With some browsers the voice is supplied by the browser’s maker (for example Google or Microsoft), and the text being read is sent to them to be spoken. That is only ever the Bible text, never anything about you.
If you write to us, we use your message and email address to reply to you. We don’t add you to a mailing list without your permission.
Changes to this page
As BibleBook grows, this page may change. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
Children
BibleBook is suitable for all ages. Apart from the usage statistics described above, which don’t identify anyone, it doesn’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
